Trail Riding at Dream Walker Ranch http://dreamwalkerhorses.com/blog/2011/10/24/trail-riding-at-dream-walker-ranch/ http://dreamwalkerhorses.com/blog/2011/10/24/trail-riding-at-dream-walker-ranch/#comments Mon, 24 Oct 2011 19:03:02 +0000 Administrator http://dreamwalkerhorses.com/blog/?p=129 Continue reading ]]> The Joys of Trail Riding

Trail riding is an increasingly popular sport in which people ride horses not in arenas or tracks, but out on a trail through the countryside. Ranches like the Dream Walker Ranch provide individuals and outfitters with horses that are perfect for trail riding. Dream Walker Ranch takes the utmost care in breeding, raising, and training Kentucky natural gaited horses, Tennessee walkers, and spotted saddle horses for trail riding.

If you are ever fortunate enough to go riding with a horse that came from Dream Walker Ranch, you will be working with a horse that is calm, well-trained, and experienced with taking riders. If you have never done so before, consider trying out the sport of trail riding. It is an enjoyable way to spend a day or even two if you include camping out. With a Dream Walker Ranch horse, your experience will be nothing but positive.

Trail riding is a great way to experience nature and the wilderness. You can see much more from the back of a horse than you would be able to do by hiking. The horse can take you farther to see more than you could do on your own. The hoof beats of horses coming down the trail is a natural sound and other creatures will not necessarily run from it. You will have the opportunity to see wildlife as you never have before when you take a trail ride.

Another great reason to try trail riding is the social aspect. Trail riding should not be undertaken alone for safety reasons. Only those who are very experienced ride alone, and even then, they need to inform others of where they are going and when they mean to return. Mostly people go trail riding in groups. It can be a great way to spend time with family and friends. You can talk while riding or just enjoy the beauty of the countryside together.

Trail riding is great fun in combination with camping. For those who truly love the outdoors, trail riding can be done over the course of several days while nights are spend sleeping out under the stars. Camping and trail riding makes a fantastic family vacation. It presents families with a great opportunity to spend time together without the interruption of work, cell phones, televisions, and computers.

For many who enjoy the sport of trail riding, the best reason to do it is for the connection with the horse. There is something very special about the bond between a horse and its rider. For someone who has never experienced the trust and understanding that develops between the two, this is the best reason to try trail riding. Especially for animal lovers, trail riding is a wonderful way to connect with these magnificent horses.

Dream Walker Ranch is dedicated to providing outfitters and individuals with horses that make trail riding a joy for the riders. Horses that come from Dream Walker Ranch are specially trained to be perfect companions on the trail.

Basic types of horse bits http://dreamwalkerhorses.com/blog/2011/10/19/basic-types-of-horse-bits/ http://dreamwalkerhorses.com/blog/2011/10/19/basic-types-of-horse-bits/#comments Wed, 19 Oct 2011 16:30:28 +0000 Administrator http://dreamwalkerhorses.com/blog/?p=127 Continue reading ]]> Although there are hundreds of design variations, the basic families of bits are defined by the way in which they use or do not use leverage. They include:

  • Direct pressure bits without leverage:
    • Snaffle bit: Uses a bit ring at the mouthpiece to apply direct pressure on the bars, tongue and corner of the mouth.
  • Leverage bits:
    • Curb bit: A bit that uses a type of lever called a shank that puts pressure not only on the mouth, but also on the poll and chin groove.
    • Pelham bit: A single curb bit with two sets of reins attached to rings at the mouthpiece and end of the shank. Partly combines snaffle and curb pressure.
    • Kimblewick or Kimberwicke: A hybrid design that uses a slight amount of mild curb leverage on a bit ring by use of set rein placement on the ring.
  • Bit combinations
    • A type of bridle that carries two bits, a bradoon and a curb, and is ridden with two sets of reins is called a Weymouth or double bridle, after the customary use of the Weymouth-style curb bit in a double bridle.
  • Non-curb leverage designs:
    • Gag bit:A bit that, depending on design, may outwardly resemble a snaffle or a curb, but with added slots or rings that provide leverage by sliding the bit up in the horse’s mouth, a very severe design.
  • In-hand bits are designed for leading horses only, and include the:
    • Chifney Anti-Rearing Bit: This is a semi-circular-shaped bit with three rings and a port or straight mouth piece used when leading horses. The port or straight piece goes inside the mouth, and the circular part lies under the jaw. The bit is attached to separate head piece or the head collar and the lead is clipped onto the bit and headcollar to limit the severity.[1]
    • Tattersall ring bit[2]
    • Horse-shoe stallion bit[2]

Bits are further described by the style of mouthpiece that goes inside the horse’s mouth as well as by the type of bit ring or bit shank that is outside the mouth, to which the reins are attached.

Types of headgear for horses that exert control with a noseband rather than a bit are usually called hackamores,[3] though the term “bitless bridle” has become a popular colloquialism in recent years.

More about the Tennessee Walking Horses History from Dream Walker Ranch http://dreamwalkerhorses.com/blog/2011/10/17/more-about-the-tennessee-walking-horses-history-from-dream-walker-ranch/ http://dreamwalkerhorses.com/blog/2011/10/17/more-about-the-tennessee-walking-horses-history-from-dream-walker-ranch/#comments Mon, 17 Oct 2011 15:59:21 +0000 Administrator http://dreamwalkerhorses.com/blog/?p=125 Continue reading ]]> Over one hundred years ago, in the Middle Basin of Tennessee, a unique breed was created – the Tennessee Walking Horse. The early settlers of this region who came from Virginia, the Carolinas and other surrounding states, brought with them fine Standardbreds, Morgans, Thoroughbreds, Canadian and Narrangansett Pacers. By combining the traits of these great horse families, the foundation was laid for the Tennessee Walker who developed distinctive qualities of its own.

The most prominent characteristic of Tennessee Walkers is their swift and smooth “running walk.” This gait is inherited and cannot be taught to a horse who does not possess it naturally. It is a square four-beat gait with a gliding motion, and a bobbing of the head and swinging of the ears accompany each step. Some Walkers are even known to snap their teeth in time. When performing the running walk, these horses will overstride, placing the back hoof ahead of their forehoof print. Traveling at speeds from 6 to 12 miles per hour, Walkers can sustain this gait for long distances without fatigue to themselves or their passengers.

Tennessee Walkers are also known for two other gaits. They are the “flat-foot walk” which is a slow, bold, and even gait; and the “canter” which is a refined gallop with a slow and high rolling motion. The canter is full of spring, rhythm and grace, and is often referred to as the “rocking chair gait.” All three gaits of the Tennessee Walker are extremely easy on the rider.

Tennessee Walking Horses were developed for the purposes of riding, driving, and light farm work. They also became very popular with Southern plantation owners who called them Plantation Walkers. These men needed horses with comfortable gaits that could carry them the many miles necessary for inspecting immense fields. The Tennessee Walker’s gaits were favored by country doctors who spent many hours on horseback. The traveling preachers, who rode from church to church practicing their sermons on the way, preferred these fast and steady walking horses.

The stallion who was chosen as the foundation sire of the Tennessee Walking Horse, when the registry was formed in 1935, was Allan. This black stallion’s ancestry was a mixture of Morgan and Hambletonian, who was the founding sire of the Standardbred. Allan was considered the greatest contributor to the Walking Horse breed.

In Tennessee the water flows over limestone rocks and the soil is rich in minerals, yielding lush nutritious bluegrass. This in turn produced the hardy Tennessee Walkers making them sound and free from disease. These qualities have been transmitted throughout the breed wherever it’s found today.

Typical Walkers are affectionate, gentle and intelligent animals. The breed is seen in a variety of colors including brown, black, bay, chestnut, roan, palomino, white or gray. Their face, legs and body may also be marked with white. Averaging 15.2 hands, they have a long graceful neck, short back, well-built hindquarters, sloping shoulders, slender but strong legs, and sound feet. The Tennessee Walker’s head is handsome and refined with bright eyes, prominent nostrils, and pointed well-shaped ears. Their manes and tails are usually left long and flowing.

Each year, on the Saturday night before Labor Day, the best walking horses are matched for the title “The Grand Champion Walking Horse of the World.” This ten-day show, The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, is held in Shelbyville, Tennessee. It began back in 1939 and is the largest walking horse show in the world.

The Walker is a popular pleasure, trail and show horse throughout the country. Their good manners and remarkably comfortable gaits make them ideal mounts for novice, middle-aged and elderly riders. For quiet relaxed excursions, the beautiful, poised and dignified Tennessee Walking Horses are indeed a pleasure to ride.
